Allison

Allison, who was 16 while Raise was being written, has been raising pygmy goats competitively in 4-H since she was nine. She lives in the suburb of Pleasant Hill, California, with her mom, grandma, and older sister. Since she doesn’t have space to keep her goats at home, her 4-H club’s goats live on a historic ranch not far from her house. Photo by Rafael Roy.

Allison and Sydney practice showmanship with their goats at Borges Ranch. During shows, judges ask contestants to “set up” their goats so that their feet are spaced evenly and they are facing forward. This helps the judges evaluate the animals’ structure. Photo by Rafael Roy.
